Paradise Is In My Soul.In. Out. In. Out. Focus on breathing. Survival above all else. Survival was the only way to win.
River’s eyes snapped open, her mouth a thin line as she began to blink. Her fingers flexed and toes curled as she sucked in a deep breath. Her teeth were gritting, grinding against each other as she attempted to force her eyes open. She was alive – the discomfort was proof of that. A grunt came from her as her mouth opened and a strained breath came out, harsh and ragged. Slowly, her eyes peeled open and she groaned, the canopy of trees above her still allowing the light to filter through, her unadjusted eyes suffering from the sudden illumination.
She was silent. She was imposing. She stood in front of her pod, her gaze cold – hands clasped behind her back. People shifted around her, preparing to send her off. She recalled the last interaction she had with her parents; there were no kind words, no words of encouragement. Win. Succeed. Do not fail. In many ways, it was almost comedic. As if she could fail.
They hadn’t taught her how to.
Her hands balled up into fists, nailed digging into her palms. There was a light pinch – it wasn’t painful, but it was a sensation. Something for her body to register. It was a jolt. It was enough. Coughing, River rolled onto her stomach, fingers digging into the ground as she pushed herself up, muscles flexing as it felt difficult to support her own body weight. Without the sun shining in her eyes, it was easier for her to focus and begin to compartmentalize.
She was alive. She survived. Now, she needed to thrive.
“Ah...” She breathed out, her head swimming as she began to look around. The area seemed to be somewhat foresty... Which meant her the briefing was accurate. Wonderful. Pushing herself up onto her knees, River focused on steadying her breathing. The gentle breeze that rolled through made her skin bristle and, opening her eyes, she looked down to see she was naked. A snort came from her accompanied with a roll of her eyes; splendid.
Slowly, she stood up, eyes narrowed as she wasn’t concerned by her own nudity. She had long sense outgrown any form of ‘shame’ that could potentially dampen her reflexes or mind; so long as she survived, it didn’t matter. Breathing slowly, she began to walk.
“Establish a source of water and shelter. Acquire food. Survey local wildlife and identify potential threats.” She spoke to herself, her hooved feet carrying her forward as she did her best to remain focused. She would win this.
